If you want to live in the Netherlands with a partner, you usually have to pass this exam before you can apply for the temporary residence permit (the MVV). It is taken on a computer at a Dutch embassy or consulate and has three parts: Knowledge of Dutch Society (KNS, 30 minutes), Reading (35 minutes) and Speaking (30 minutes). It is level A1, the very first step of Dutch, and you do not have to write. You pass when you reach the pass mark in each part, and a failed part can be retaken on its own. The full exam costs €150 (Speaking €60, Reading €50, KNS €40) and DUO sends the results within eight weeks. Whether you must take it depends on things like your age and nationality, so check with the IND first. It is not the same exam as the NT2 state exams, which are higher-level (B1 and B2) and taken in the Netherlands.
What you'll learn
- The three parts of the exam, how long each lasts and what it asks you to do
- The registration steps: application form, payment to DUO, the appointment at the embassy
- What to bring on exam day and how the day runs (about two hours, all on a computer)
- What happens after: pass marks per part, retaking one part, and applying for the MVV within a year
- How to practise for free on Asagno: the 100 official KNS questions, a reading exam and speaking prompts
What the exam day looks like
1. Knowledge of Dutch Society (KNS) — up to 30 minutes. 2. Break. 3. Reading — up to 35 minutes. 4. Break. 5. Speaking — up to 30 minutes. You take everything on a computer and you do not have to write.
Bring the confirmation you received from DUO and a recent colour passport photo that meets the Dutch requirements; you show your passport and your fingerprints are taken.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to take this exam?
It depends on aspects such as your age and nationality, and some people are exempt, for example for health reasons. The IND website (or +31 88 0430 430) tells you whether it is mandatory in your case.
What if I fail one part?
You only retake the part you failed. You register again and pay again for that part. You must apply for your residence permit within one year of passing the last part.
Where can I practise for free?
Asagno has all three parts: study the 100 official KNS questions with pictures, take a timed reading exam, and practise the speaking prompts. The official study package is also free on naarnederland.nl.
