Since 1 January 2026 the examen civique is compulsory for a first multi-year residence permit, a first resident card and naturalisation in France. It is a digital multiple-choice test of 40 questions with four options each, lasting a maximum of 45 minutes, and you need 32 correct answers, which is 80%. A correct answer is worth one point, a wrong or missing one nothing. 28 questions test your knowledge of the principles and values of the Republic, institutions, rights and duties, history, geography and culture, and living in French society; 12 put you in a situation and ask what you would do. Language level requirements are separate, so check the rules for your own case.
