Spain is organised territorially into 17 autonomous communities and two autonomous cities, Ceuta and Melilla. Each community has a Statute of Autonomy, its own government and parliament, and takes on powers such as education and health. Below them are 50 provinces and the municipalities, governed by the Ayuntamiento, which the mayor presides over; municipal elections are held every four years. Some communities have a co-official language next to Castilian: Catalan, Galician, Basque and Valencian, among others. You should know the capitals of the main regions: Barcelona for Catalonia, Seville for Andalusia, Valencia for the Valencian Community, Vitoria-Gasteiz for the Basque Country and Santiago de Compostela for Galicia.
